Racing Heritage

The Legend of the MGC GTS ‘Sebring’

In the mid-1960s, MG set out to prove that it could once again compete with the world’s best sports car manufacturers. The result was the MGC GTS – a lightweight, purpose-built competition car that embodied the spirit of British endurance racing.

Developed in secrecy by the MG Competitions Department at Abingdon, the GTS was conceived as a racing evolution of the newly introduced MGC. While outwardly recognisable, almost every aspect of the car was re-engineered for competition. Lightweight aluminium bodywork, Perspex glazing and an extensively developed version of the 3.0-litre straight-six engine produced around 220 bhp while keeping weight to approximately 900 kg.

Only two complete factory cars were built, affectionately known as Mable and Romeo. They made their competitive debut during the 1967 season before travelling to the legendary Sebring 12 Hours in Florida. Against far more established rivals, the MGs exceeded all expectations, finishing tenth overall and winning their class—still regarded as one of the greatest factory racing achievements in MG’s history. It was this remarkable performance that earned the cars the name by which they are remembered today: the MGC GTS Sebring.

At Rufford, the MGC GTS Sebring is more than an inspiration; it is the foundation of our philosophy. We celebrate the purity, engineering and understated beauty of these extraordinary cars while applying modern craftsmanship and sympathetic engineering to create vehicles that honour the originals without attempting to imitate them. Every Rufford is built with the same purpose that inspired the Abingdon engineers nearly sixty years ago: to create a driver’s car that is lightweight, engaging and timeless.
